goals in their minds but hadn’t written them anywhere,
and 84 percent had no goals at all. After 10 years, the
same group of students was interviewed again, and
what they found was amazing. The 13 percent of the
class who had goals, but did not write them down,
earned twice the amount of the 84 percent who had
no goals. The three percent who had written goals
were earning, on average, 10 times as much as the other 97 percent of the class combined. So, which group
are you in – and which do you want to be in? Write
down your plans and action items, and be specific as to
what you will do and when you will do it.
Communicate your plans verbally. Equally powerful
on a neurological level is literally speaking something
out of your mouth that you wish to accomplish or
take action on. A study done by the British Journal of
Health Psychology asked participants to exercise once
per week. A control group was asked to track their
efforts, a second group was asked to track and read
a motivational brochure on the positive effects of
exercise, and a third group was asked to add one ele-
ment – speaking aloud their specific intent to exercise
that week, including where, when, and for how long.
The first two groups ended up with participants fol-
lowing through on their exercise commitment about
35% of the time while the third group who specifically
verbalized their plans followed through at a whop-
ping 91% rate. So, speak your plans aloud, ideally to
another person, as this adds a layer of accountability
that increases your odds as well.
These simple steps, simply work, and you can put
them into practice immediately, today, right this minute. Select a few great ideas from this very publication – write down your plan to take action in the next
thirty days – share with a colleague, manager, or friend
what you are going to do and when you are going to
do it. I already know the results you will see by doing
so. And at the end of the day, people can doubt your
intentions, but they cannot doubt your actions.
