My final a-ha moment came when I stumbled
across the research of Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky
from the University of California who was exploring
what it takes to make wellbeing changes last. She’d
discovered that unfortunately we adapt to almost all
the good things that happen in our lives because of
the creeping toll of normalcy and our ever-increasing
I can’t tell you what a relief it was to realize that
the reason everything around me felt grey even
though I had what looked like an incredible life was
simply because I’d adapted and that this was a normal
part of human functioning. I was even more relieved
to find that by practicing gratitude, keeping things
novel and not comparing myself so much to others, I
could quickly restore the color back into my life and
keep it that way moving forward.
Based on this I implemented a third guiding prac-
When I put my 5 steps together with the 3
guiding practices I was finally able to embrace the
raw, messy, magic that is life and shape it in ways to
authentically and consistently bring out the best in
myself and others.
And while I’m always happy to share personal anecdotes of how applying these steps improved my life,
perhaps it’s more compelling to know that a growing
body of data shows that when wellbeing is cultivated
within and amongst employees through these kinds of
steps they are found to have higher levels of productivity, produce more sales, perform better in leadership positions, and receive higher performance ratings
and higher pay. They also enjoy more job security and
are less likely to take sick days, to quit, or to become
burned out. Now that’s what I call flourishing.
ARE YOU READY TO FLOURISH?
If you feel like you’re just functioning in a world that’s mostly grey, chances are you’re missing some of these steps. To help you bring the color back into your life and con- sistently flourish this e-book will guide you with practical and playful ideas that will
encourage you to embed the 5 tested practical steps of wellbeing into your lives and the
guiding practices to make them a lasting reality.
As you get started it’s important to note that just like life, these steps are dynamic
rather than linear. You don’t have to complete them in a certain order but ultimately you
do want all eight steps to be present in order to move from functioning to flourishing.
The dosage required for each step will also vary between us depending on the type of
people we are, the resources we have available, the situation we are in and the outcomes
we’re trying to achieve. Determining which steps to focus on at which times, as you en-
counter the natural lows and highs we all experience, is part of the dance of life.
To guide your choices about where to invest and what to do, at the end of this e-book, I have created the Wheel of Flourishing for you to print out and map where you
are today on each of these steps and where you would like to be tomorrow. At the end
of the book, you can also record the small tested practical changes you’re trying to make.
Keep it somewhere you can see each day as the roadmap to guide your journey forward.

- Be mindful that when wellbeing habits,
experiences or outcome no longer help you to feel good or
function effectively then it's time to get grateful, mix it up or
reset your expectations to head off adaptation.
