women climb the ranks and/or enter the workforce.
There will always be challenges for men and women
alike. It is simply important to have confidence and
purpose in your profession and to hold yourself and
others to appropriate standards of behavior. One of
my favorite sayings is that it is none of your business
what other people have to say about you. If you allow yourself to worry or be overly concerned about
what other people think about you, you’re simply
wasting valuable time.
On the topic of equality, I hope we steadily remain
aware and sensitive to the consequences of extremes.
Some women say they want complete and total
equality, but have no problem accepting traditional
attitudes towards women when it is convenient. They
also talk about women’s rights, but when it’s time to
start a family, they want to stay at home and raise
their children. It is certainly not wrong to want such
things, but if you really believe in equality, men should
have the same rights and get paternity leave, just as
women are entitled to maternity leave.
Women shouldn’t feel entitled, either. The person
who is best qualified for the job should get it. Yes,
there are more men in the field, so it is only natural
at this point in time that men still have an advantage—but only for a while. As more women join the
industry, eventually there will be a natural progression
toward women holding more coveted positions.
My advice to women is simple: love what you do
so that your passion and expertise delivers a value
proposition that is undeniable. Suddenly, you won’t
see obstacles as roadblocks but simply as part of the
journey. Setbacks are opportunities to build upon,
though sometimes this is hard to understand when
you feel discouraged and let down. Believe in yourself
and your abilities to make a difference. That’s what it
takes to succeed in life and in the dynamic business
